Frogs are potentially sensitive indicators of road impacts, with studies indicating particular susceptibility to road mortality. Calling, i.e., breeding, behavior could also be affected by traffic noise. We investigated effects on frog abundance and calling behavior where a busy highway crosses rainforest stream breeding habitat in northeast Australia. Frog abundance was repeatedly surveyed along five stream transects during a summer breeding season. Abundance of two species, Litoria rheocola and Austrochaperina pluvialis, increased significantly with perpendicular distance from the road along two transects. No trends in abundance were detected for A. pluvialis on two other transects where it was common, or for Litoria serrata on one transect where... |

In Obihiro City, the number of red squirrel, Sciurus vulgaris o ientis, death due to traffic accidents was large. Therefore, a number of measures have been taken to prevent these numerous traffic accidents. The “Red Squirrel Traffic Accident Map” was prepared based on data collected by citizen group and our laboratory of Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine. Based on this map, warning sign posts indicating “Squirrel Crossing” were installed in 18 locations within the city. In addition, a footbridge for squirrels (Eco-bridge) was constructed. |

Road kills of medium- and small-sized mammals, reptiles and amphibians were surveyed in eastern Hokkaido, northern Japan. Four hundreds and fifty-five carcasses of medium- and small-sized mammals, 17 carcasses of reptiles and 1051 carcasses of amphibians were collected from April 1996 to March 1998. In mammals, the species with the highest number of casualties due to traffic accidents was the Big-clawed Shrew with a total of 152 killed, followed by Red Squirrel (94) and Red Fox (85). Road kills of reptiles were low, with only 17 mortalities of four species. In amphibians, a great majority of the mortalities were Ezo Brown Frogs with 1,044 casualties. |
